Patient-specific Clavicle Implant Plate

By Dr. Sachin Tapasvi

Patient Overview:

A 31-year-old male patient presented with a malunion of the right clavicle, causing compression of the brachial plexus.

Surgical Planning:

The surgical plan involved an osteotomy at the site of the malunion to achieve anatomical shape correction and relieve pressure on the brachial plexus caused by the malunion. The patient’s healthy contralateral clavicle was mirrored for the desired bone position post-osteotomy.

The 3D-printed models and patient-specific implant enabled meticulous preoperative planning, allowing the surgeon to visualize the ideal post-operative clavicle position and design the implant plate accordingly. The surgical guide ensured accurate osteotomy execution, minimizing the risks associated with freehand osteotomies.

3D-Printed Solution:

Jajal Medical collaborated with Dr. Sachin Tapasvi to provide a comprehensive 3D-printed solution for this case.

Pre-operative planning models:

3D-printed models of the patient’s clavicle with malunion and a mirrored model of the healthy contralateral clavicle. These models facilitated surgical planning and visualization of the desired post-operative clavicle alignment.

Surgical resection guide:

A 3D-printed guide facilitated a precise osteotomy at the planned malunion site, ensuring proper bone angulation and minimizing disruption to surrounding structures.

Patient-specific clavicle implant plate:

Utilizing the mirrored healthy clavicle model as a reference, a customized implant plate was designed to fit the repositioned clavicle segment after osteotomy. This ensured accurate anatomical shape correction and minimized the need for intraoperative plate contouring.

Post-op Outcome:

The use of a patient-specific implant plate and surgical guide facilitated an accurate anatomical shape correction of the clavicle and decompression of the brachial plexus. This approach offers potential benefits for improved patient outcomes, including:

  • Enhanced accuracy and efficacy of surgical procedures
  • Reduced risk of intraoperative complications
  • Improved long-term functional outcomes for the patient
